BACKGROUND

Development of the self has long been a study by ancient thinkers that is still being practiced today by modern man. Trying to find out the purpose of existence and ways to reach that goal is still being tackled. One road to travel is through research in education. Jack Whitehead says:
"Another idea that continues to inspire teacher-researchers is that all individuals can create their own living educational theory in the descriptions and explanations they produce for their own learning as they ask, research, and answer questions of the kind "How do I improve my practice?'"" (J. Whitehead)

PURPOSE

Through this research I hope to prove that reflection of the self can lessen the gap between espouses and actual since there is a difference in what is actual and what I want to accomplish.
The idea of self-reflection can be done through Action Research in the form of a living educational theory.
I chose this research because I wanted to improve my professional practice and that the process of self-reflection has allowed me to do scholarly research and an enquiry on the self.
I am writing this thesis to contribute to a body of knowledge to bring about change and understanding in myself and possibly others.
Every individual is unique and any person can improve their professional practice by reflecting on their living educational theory in the form of portfolio)

In AR we ask:
"What would you like to improve?
Why am I concerned about it?
How can I improve it?
Who can help me and how?
When will I know it has improved?"
