Throughout history education has played a major role in the development of civilization through the transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next. Starting from the initial development of the individual to the collective growth of the society it was and is the goal of many cultures to have their subjects go through a learning process for the continual survival of their culture. On an individual level education is the upbringing of a person to an adult and is a lifelong process. This continual experience of growth is experienced through a journey of successes, mishaps and seemingly static activities.
I think that the goal of education in its broadest sense is to attain virtue which will lead to happiness.
Virtue is something that has been claimed by many cultures when describing their educational goals. Whether it be intellectual or moral virtue, when combined they build character in the person. Intellectual virtue can be found in art and science whereas moral virtue can be found temperance, courage,  justice, prudence and practical wisdom according to the ancient philosophers.
