Overview
Writing 1 and 2 is a crach course in writing skills. The major focus is upon academic writing.
The first part of the term inroduces basic paragraph patterns. The second part of the term presents the most common essay
patterns found in both university and professional writing. Readings provide examples by both professional and students of
the writing forms covered in the cousre.
The second focus of this course is a review of grammar and basic sentence construction,
both presented within a business context and introducing an extensive vocabulary for use in business.
Purpose
The of this course is to lay a strong writing foundation on which students will build
in subsequent terms. By the end of this course the student will:
- Have used the process approach to writing
- Know the basic tereminology used in discussion writing
- Have reviewed grammatical structures and verb tenses
- Be able to write simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
- Be able to write a clear paragraph that includes a topic sentence and supporting information
- Be able to use narrative, descriptive, and expository forms
- Be able to organze a paragraph depending on the form
- Use punctuation more correctly than at the start of term
- Use details to express a specific idea
- Understand the basic format of an essay
- Be able to write an example essay
- Be able to write a compare/contrast essay
- Be able to write a classification essay or a process analysis essay
- Have begun to develop proof-reading and editing skills
